The Chalkboard Company Limited was incorporated in 2013 by Carl Thomas who set aside Architecture in 2011 after 30 years of continuous post-graduate practice (B Arch (hons) degree from the University of Auckland in 1979). Contemporary with this transition was a shift from city to country culminating in the purchase of a property at Matakawau which is 35km north of Waiuku up the Awhitu Peninsula. Here the Chalkboard Company Limited design studio and manufacturing workshop operates.
The company started up with the manufacture of a standard suite of chalkboards and one easel design. Since then the range of chalkboards and easels has been expanded and a number of new products have been added to the range - sandwich boards, retail display boards, chalk-stations for children, cafe boards, courtyard boards. Carl assists customers with their custom-design requirements. He ensures he understands what his clients are trying to achieve before coming up with a recommendation, concept or sketch and a written quotation.
What makes The Chalkboard Company unique in this area is that Carl designs and makes everything himself - all products are hand-crafted, and quality-controlled. New Zealand-sourced materials are used wherever possible.
